A local fisherman receives a new truck he won at the Stanley Fire Department Trout Fishing Tournament

PENN LAIRD, Va. (WHSV) – The Stanley Volunteer Fire Department held its annual Trout Tournament on May 7.

“We had 251 entries, I think everyone pretty much caught fish,” said Mike Foltz of the Stanley Volunteer Fire Department.

The tournament is a fundraiser for the department.

“Our team went out, found sponsors and helped organize the tournament and we did it as a fundraiser and a great opportunity, we certainly appreciate it, we are delighted that Mr Moyer won the truck , it’s nice to see it all come together,” said Ed Markowitz, with the 100 Boy Scouts of America troop.

Fish are tagged with monetary prices and a fish is tagged with a price for a van.

“We had 11 fish tagged in total, one for the truck and the other 10 tags were for prizes of $100,” said Kevin J. Painter of the Stanley Volunteer Fire Department.

For the first time in the history of the event, a fisherman won the jackpot.

Keith’s Auto Sales in Penn Laird donated the winning truck.

“We have a lot of amazing customers in the Page County area as we always try to do whatever we can to help the local fire departments, rescue crews, and of course Stanley called us and they contacted us about this opportunity and we thought it was a great way to help out the community a bit,” said Matt of Keith’s Auto Sales at Penn Laird.

Phil Moyer finally got the keys to his new ride on Friday morning.

“I’m blessed my intentions to go out that morning I wasn’t going to go and I got up and like everyone else I paid my dues and went and I didn’t really wasn’t expecting it. I love fishing and supporting them,” said Moyer, who caught the winning fish.

Although Moyer hit the jackpot this year, he said he’s already looking forward to re-launching his line next year in support of the Stanely Fire Department and the Boy Scouts of America 100 Troop. .

“I remember he told me one thing that comes to mind, he said that I asked our Lord to bless me this morning because I needed a ride so badly and that the Lord has blessed him with this truck,” Bruce Stoneberger, a member of the Stanley Volunteer Fire Department, said.
