MONTGOMERY, Ala. (WSFA) – AAA Alabama will offer free VIN etching theft prevention services to Montgomery next week.
VIN engraving services will be offered at the AAA office at 6901 Vaughn Road on Tuesdays from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.
According to AAA, VIN etching consists of chemically etching the VIN number permanently and discreetly on all the windows of a vehicle. Law enforcement encourages VIN engraving and says it often acts as a deterrent to car theft.
“VIN engraving has proven to be a valuable tool in the prevention of auto theft,” AAA Alabama spokesperson Clay Ingram said in a statement. “This public interest event will help promote proactive safety measures for motorists. Additionally, some insurance companies, such as AAA Insurance, offer a small discount for having vehicles engraved.
In recent years, the number of motor vehicle thefts has decreased. AAA says this can be attributed in part to the vigilance of law enforcement through the use of special programs like the use of bait cars and preventive measures taken by motorists, such as VIN Etching. VIN Etching reduces theft by making it harder for thieves to resell the vehicle or its parts.
“Auto thieves try to identify easy-to-steal cars and leave little trace when it comes to dismantling them in so-called ‘wrecking shops’. A car that has VIN windows etched in it is less desirable to be resold illegally or taken apart for parts,” Ingram added.
AAA says the process will take 15 minutes per vehicle.
The service will be accessible to all and will be carried out by appointment only. To make an appointment, simply call the AAA Alabama office in Montgomery at 334-272-1650.
