Direct Line Group today launched its new flagship automotive technology center in Stechford, Birmingham. Direct Line Group (DLG) has the largest network of insurer-owned garages in the UK and the new center gives the business an edge as the car services industry goes through an unprecedented period of transformation. £2 million has been invested in the facility which will develop the new tools and train its staff across its network in the capabilities needed in the changing engine technology landscape, including the ability to test various calibration tools and Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS) repair methods.
Additionally, as part of its contribution to the fight against climate change, Direct Line Group will use the Center to test ways to make its network more energy efficient. This includes testing for:
• offering customers the option of “green” parts which could reduce the need for new spare parts
• the feasibility of whether paint booths that currently rely on gas could be replaced with electricity derived from renewable sources.
• the viability of alternative fuels, such as hydrogenated vegetable oil (HVO), to power recovery trucks
Penny James, Managing Director of Direct Line Group, said:
“The launch of our flagship technology center shows how the Group is innovating to deliver the speed and quality of service that our customers appreciate today and in the future, in a world where automotive technology is rapidly changing. The center also allows us to test ways to achieve our goal of having the most energy efficient repair network in the UK, helping to achieve our net zero ambition.
“I am proud that the center was launched and completed during the pandemic and it is a testament to the skill, experience and commitment of my DLG colleagues.”
PaulNightingale, director of claims services at Direct Line Group, said:
“The new Center enables us to identify and anticipate future trends and to continue to innovate. It gives us the facilities to undertake our test and learn work and develop new tools and capabilities. It also means that we Let’s equip our employees with the new skills needed to succeed in a rapidly changing market.”
