Fire causes ‘at least $50,000’ in damage to second-hand East Side parking lot, owner says

SAN ANTONIO – The San Antonio Fire Department responded to a lot of used auto sales in the 800 block of South WW White Road shortly after 4 a.m. Saturday morning.

The parking lot owner and his nephew said they were in complete disbelief.

“Oh man, my heart broke because I mean, my uncle is a very hardworking man. And seeing him go through something like that was, it was very heartbreaking,” Asif Daredia said.

Daredia told KSAT that he and his uncle have faced a lot of criminal activity since the ground opened three years ago, but nothing like the level of damage caused by the fire.

“To be honest, this side of town is a bit rough. We occasionally have a few break-ins where I’ve had instances where people break down doors and steal batteries or catalytic converters, which is a big problem in San Antonio,” Daredia said.

The business is equipped with at least five cameras on the side of the building facing the scene. The problem is that none of the cameras are working.

The business owner is hoping cameras across the street at a funeral home captured what, or more importantly, who started the fire.

“They are very good neighbours, friendly to us at all times. We need help. They are always there, too, and vice versa. So, I mean, it would be our best bet to go over there and see if they have any footage of whatever happened,” Daredia said.

Crews on the scene said the fire started with one vehicle and flames quickly spread to several others.

“So basically he said he found like gasoline on the floor. He suspects it’s probably something to do with the fire,” Daredia said.
