Miami, November 1, 2021 – Miami Dade College (MDC) recently received a $ 25,000 grant from TD Bank, America’s Most Convenient Bank®, to increase the number of women and minority students in the Tesla START program, a 16-year intensive training program. Electric Vehicle Maintenance weeks designed to provide students with the skills for a successful career as an electric vehicle technician.
“We are very grateful for TD Bank’s support to increase the number of minorities in the Tesla START program,” said Antonio Delgado, vice president of innovation and technology partnerships at MDC. “This scholarship will encourage more women and minorities to apply for the Electric Vehicle Technician program.”
Based at the West Campus, students develop technical expertise through a mixed approach of classroom theory, hands-on labs and self-paced learning. Students receive a stipend while they are in the program. Upon successful completion of the program, graduates have the necessary certification for a placement as service technicians at one of Tesla’s service centers across the country, including South Florida.
“These scholarships will not only develop desired skills in a growing field, but will also help make the transition to a low-carbon economy,” said Felipe Basulto, President of Retail, Florida at the Bank. TD funding will be used to cover the tuition fees of ten students during the 2021-2022 school year. Particular emphasis will be placed on outreach efforts to recruit minority students, especially black students, who are under-represented in this field of work.
The grant was awarded to support the Vibrant Planet pillar of TD Ready Commitment, TD Bank’s corporate citizenship platform, which targets $ 775 million by 2030 in community giving in four areas that support change necessary to create a more inclusive and sustainable future. The Vibrant Planet pillar and TD Ready Commitment’s Low Carbon Economy initiative aim to improve green spaces, target $ 75 billion to help support clean economic growth and a low carbon economy by targeting zero emissions net by 2050.
