Their announcement said the money will be distributed once a $3 billion transfer of excess funds to Michigan auto insurance companies is complete.

Once the transfer is complete, insurers will have 60 days to send checks for $400 per vehicle to eligible drivers.

Whitmer said, “I requested these refunds because I am committed to reducing costs for the people of Michigan and putting money back in people’s pockets.”

Auto insurers will have until May 9, 2022 to disperse checks.
