Mondeik wins $5,000 | News, Sports, Jobs

NORWAY — Gleason’s Justin Mondeik took the lead on a 53rd lap restart and battled NASCAR truck champion Johnny Sauter in the descending laps to win the 38th annual Stateline Challenge at Norway Speedway on Friday night.

The win was worth $5,000 and was Mondeik’s third straight victory over Stateline and his fourth flag in Norway this year.

Four warning flags flew in the first 11 laps of the contest, with local driver Joey Pontbriand keeping the lead through the ambers. Mondeik, who started the contest 11th, fought his way through the field to 6th on lap 17.

Former track champion Dan Lindsley took the lead on a 26th lap restart and held on to the lead until a warning flew in for a scheduled 12-minute break at 50 laps.

Mondeik had worked his way up to second at the break and only needed three laps when the race resumed to take the lead. The Gleason ace kept a scorching pace and Sauter at bay to score the biggest payday of his career.

“The most money I made before that was $3,500 in the Larry Detjens Memorial race, so that’s huge,” Mondeik exclaimed in victory lane. “I appreciate that Johnny (Sauter) got me clean at the end. I wasn’t really happy that a yellow flew with six laps to go for an air filter that was irrelevant, but it is it.

Sauter settled for silver for second, while fast qualifier Jason Wells was the top-ranked Michigan driver, taking third. Scott Stanchina took third place while Andy Monday rounded out the top five.

The race was slowed by 10 warning periods and 16 cars were racing at the end of the 100 lap feature. Fourteen of those 16 cars were running in the lead lap when the ladies flew.

In other action, Marinette’s Kevin Peterson picked up his third super stock win of the season, while stock car division fast qualifier Jon Maenpaa of Kingsford took the division win. Fast qualifier Dean Bellmore of Hermansville won the 4-cylinder event.

The races resume next Friday evening July 8 at 7 p.m.
