Members of a rickshaw union here have staged a protest against Chief Minister Charanjit Singh Channi on the Jagraon Bridge for not giving up their pending challans.

The union’s Lakhwinder Singh Dhillon said the CM had earlier announced that all pending car drivers’ challans would be canceled and that drivers would only have to pay a fine of Rs 1.

Dhillon said that whenever motorists drove to the RTA office, they were told that no notifications had been issued to waive the pending challans.

He said: “The CM came to meet with us last month. We had raised a few issues, including the pending challans. We were assured that the challans would be removed and motorists would only have to pay Rs 1 for the same. As the challan amount was not canceled, we did not collect our auto rickshaw documents. We are forced to make repeated rounds of the RTA office but our voice is ignored. So, we organized a demonstration today.

Protesting drivers ended the dharna after police assured them that action would be taken to resolve their issues. “If our problem is not resolved on Saturday, we would make another plan to shut down auto services across town soon,” they said.

“We are misguided and our feelings are hurt because the CM has not kept the promises it made with the auto rickshaw drivers,” said another auto rickshaw driver.

Gurdeep Singh Gosha of Youth Akali Dal came to support the rickshaw driver protesters. Gosha alleged that the Congressional government was deceiving rickshaw drivers by making false announcements.

He said CM Charanjit Singh Channi was just making announcements because he failed to deliver on promises he made with auto rickshaw drivers last month.
