“Shugah” Shane Sexton finishes 14th on return from Perris Auto Speedway and enters top 20 in points

Shaking off the 410 cobwebs after nearly five months out of action, “Shugah” Shane Sexton returned to USAC/CRA Sprint Car Series competition last Saturday night at Perris Auto Speedway. The affable rider started 19th in the 30-lap main event and advanced for a 14th-place finish.

Driving a new GAS chassis, Sexton clocked a 17.187 lap and rode 10 laps into the third race. After a disappointing seventh-place finish in the heat, the Warner Springs, Calif., rider lined up in 19th to start the 30-lap main event. He avoided all the tangles that happened on the track and moved forward throughout the race. When Steve Russell’s checkered flag stopped the proceedings at the end of the 30th lap, “Shugah” was down to 14th.

Advancing in the race also propelled Sexton higher in the series championship points standings. To be exact, he moved from 21st to 19th ahead of the next race at Mohave Valley Raceway in Arizona on October 8. Sexton’s only other appearance at the track, located minutes from the Colorado River and just 20 minutes from Laughlin, was successful. After qualifying 22nd fastest and placing eighth in his heat on April 22, Sexton started 21st in the main race and advanced nine positions to finish 12th on the racy 1/3 mile oval. .

Sexton was scheduled to be back on the track Oct. 1 in Perris with the USAC/CRA series but that race was canceled. As previously mentioned, he will return to action in Mohave Valley. The young driver will then conclude his 410 speed car season with five races in nine days. The first two dates are at Yuma Western’s 55th Annual Chapman Chevrolet World Championship at Cocopah Speedway in Arizona on October 28-29. This will be followed by the 26th Annual Heimark Anheuser Busch Budweiser Oval National Championships at Perris Auto Speedway on November 3, 4 and 5.
