“Shugah” Shane Sexton finishes 14th on return from Perris Auto Speedway

Teenage rider breaks into Top 20 in points

–Shaking the 410 cobwebs after nearly five months out of action, “Shugah” Shane Sexton returned to USAC/CRA Sprint Car Series competition last Saturday night at Perris Auto Speedway. The affable driver started 19e in the 30-lap main event and advanced for a 14e-arrival point.

Driving a new GAS chassis, Sexton clocked a 17.187 lap and rode 10 laps into the third race. After a disappointing seventh-place finish in the heat, the Warner Springs, Calif. rider lined up in the 19e position to start the 30-lap main event. He avoided all the tangles that happened on the track and moved forward throughout the race. When Steve Russell’s checkered flag stopped the proceedings at the end of the 30e round, “Shugah” was up to 14e.

Advancing in the race also propelled Sexton higher in the series championship points standings. To be exact, he jumped from 21st at 19e position before the next race at Mohave Valley Raceway in Arizona on October 8e. Sexton’s only other appearance at the track, located minutes from the Colorado River and just 20 minutes from Laughlin, was successful. After qualifying 22n/a fastest and placing eighth in his heat on April 22n/aSexton started 21st in the nine main and advanced positions to finish 12e on the 1/3 mile racy oval.

Sexton was due to be back on the track on October 1st in Perris with the USAC/CRA series but this race was cancelled. As previously mentioned, he will return to action in Mohave Valley. The young driver will then conclude his 410 speed car season with five races in nine days. The first two dates are at 55e Annual Chapman Chevrolet of Yuma Western World Championship at Cocopah Speedway in Arizona on October 28e and 29e. It will be followed by the 26e Annual Heimark Anheuser Busch Budweiser Oval Nationals at Perris Auto Speedway on November 3rd4e, and 5e.
