This comes from the editorial board of the Columbian. The largest newspaper in Washington’s 3rd District.

Because of her thoughtfulness, transparency, demeanor, and long history in Southwest Washington, Democrat Marie Gluesenkamp Perez is the best candidate to represent the region in Congress. The Columbian editorial board strongly recommends voting for Perez as a representative from the 3rd congressional district.

In Perez, they’ll find a candidate who lives in rural Skamania County, owns a six-bay auto repair shop with her husband, and supports gun rights. In other words, she’s not the kind of big-city liberal who often attracts the scorn of conservatives. When Perez talks about the difficulties in providing health care to employees or finding adequate daycare for her son or the need for broadband internet in rural areas, she knows what she is talking about.

Joy Kent aspires to be the next Jim Jordan.

Kent said during a debate on Saturday that he supports Biden as the legally elected president of the United States. Either Kent lied last year or he was lying on Saturday. Either way, we can’t trust a candidate who speaks so willingly out of both sides of his mouth.

By contrast, Perez spends his time thinking about the issues that matter to Southwest Washington.

About immigration, she says, “I am not in favor of open borders”. She advocates increased spending on border patrols and electronic surveillance. On an Interstate 5 bridge project, she says the federal government needs to be involved: “My role in Congress is to bring home those federal tax dollars.” About abortion, she writes: “I will stand up to politicians who try to tell women what they can and cannot do with their own bodies. Kent called for a national abortion ban.

Perez focused on the issues that matter here while Kent spent time trying to build his national profile. One candidate will work for Southwest Washington; the other will seek celebrity status.

The candidates have a second debate in Longview at the LCC on October 27.
