The Wells Fargo Active Cash® Card is a remarkable flat-rate cashback credit card, featuring an impressive 2% cash back structure, an easy-to-earn welcome bonus and an introductory APR period on purchases and balance transfers.
Read on for a closer look at the card details and list of benefits.
Wells Fargo Active Cash Card Benefits
- Awards: Unlimited 2% cash back on all purchases
- Welcome offer: $200 bonus cash after spending $1,000 in purchases in the first three months
- Annual subscription : $0
- APR presentation: 0% introductory APR for 15 months from account opening on eligible purchases and balance transfers
- Variable APR: 15.24% to 25.24%
As a welcome bonus, new cardholders can earn $200 in cash back after spending $1,000 on purchases within the first three months of account opening. It’s an interesting offer, but not the best we’ve seen. Other cash back cards with no annual fee offer the same $200 cash bonus for a $500 spending requirement (within the same three month timeframe), such as the Chase Freedom Flex℠.
However, if you’re already planning to spend $1,000 in the first three months, there’s really nothing to complain about with this offer. Plus, there are additional benefits that make Wells Fargo Active Cash worthwhile.
This card’s unlimited 2% cash back rate is one of the highest among fixed rate credit cards. In general, a flat-rate rewards structure is an ideal choice for those who don’t plan to shop intensely in specific categories or simply prefer the simplicity of earning the same rewards rate on all purchases.
In terms of redemption, you can redeem your rewards for:
- Reporting Credits
- Direct deposits to a Wells Fargo account
- Travel through Wells Fargo Rewards
- Gift cards
- Cash at Wells Fargo ATMs
Introductory APR Offers
As a new Active Cash cardholder, you’ll receive an introductory APR of 0% for the first 15 months on eligible purchases and balance transfers (followed by a variable APR between 15.24% and 25.24% ).
This introductory APR offer is pretty standard compared to other balance transfer offers on the market. If you’re primarily interested in Active Cash because of this benefit, make sure you can afford to pay off your debt within the 15-month window. Otherwise, there are other balance transfer credit cards that offer up to 21 months interest-free (although they probably don’t offer the same level of ongoing rewards).
Also note that Wells Fargo Active Cash charges a 3% balance transfer fee ($5 minimum) for the first 120 days of account opening. After these first 120 days, this fee increases to 5% (minimum of $5).
Mobile phone protection
The Active Cash card serves as insurance for your mobile phone against damage or theft. You will receive up to $600 per claim for each month you pay your cell phone bill with your credit card (up to two claims per year). This insurance will cover the cost of your original phone. If you plan to pay for your cellular insurance separately, this benefit could be an easy way to save money.
Compared to World Elite Mastercard cell phone protection (offered by similar cashback cards, like the Citi® Double Cash Card), Wells Fargo offers a slightly better deal. You will get an annual limit of $1,200 (two claims of $600) with Active Cash and an annual limit of $1,000 through Mastercard.
Visa Signature Benefits
As a Visa credit card, Active Cash cardholders have access to Visa Signature benefits, such as Extended Warranty Protection, Trip Cancellation Insurance, Baggage Delay Insurance, and Visa Signature Concierge Services.
Visa Signature benefits also encompass Visa Traditional benefits, including collision damage waiver coverage for car rentals, curbside shipping, and zero liability coverage for unauthorized purchases .
Maximizing Wells Fargo Active Cash
Reach the welcome bonus spending requirement
Maximizing Wells Fargo Active Cash starts with knowing how to earn the Welcome Bonus (and, thankfully, it’s a simple process). Just make sure you spend up to $333 per month for three months with your Active Cash card, and you’ll automatically earn your $1,000 cash bonus.
Be strategic in your spending
In terms of ongoing rewards, if you have one or more rewards credit cards with specified bonus categories, use Active Cash to cover everything else. For example, if you also have the Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card, use it to cover meals, streaming service subscriptions, travel and online grocery purchases. Then consider using Active Cash for everything else – in-store groceries, gas purchases, department store purchases, etc. – in order to earn 2% cash back on “out of category” spending.
Plan ahead to reduce your debt
If you plan to take advantage of the Active Cash card balance transfer offer, make sure to transfer your balance within the first 120 days of opening your account. There is a balance transfer fee of 3% ($5 minimum) for the first 120 days from account opening, after which the fee increases to 5% ($5 minimum). Plus, the sooner you transfer your balance, the longer you’ll have to pay off your debts, interest-free.
Don’t forget to pay your mobile phone bill with your Active Cash card
If you want to take advantage of Wells Fargo’s Cell Phone Protection policy, you’ll need to make sure you start paying your monthly phone bill with Active Cash, as the policy is only in place for those who pay their phone bill. with this card.
The bottom line
If you’re looking for a credit card that offers a high cash back rate on all purchases, with no rotating bonus categories to activate and track, Wells Fargo Active Cash may be the perfect fit.
This card is also a solid choice if you’re planning on doing a balance transfer (or paying off an upcoming big purchase). The welcome bonus, Visa Signature perks and cellphone protection certainly sweeten the pot.
